I'm not crazy

In Stick a fork in it!, They're... family? on December 19, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Even though it seems like maybe I am, sometimes.  Uncle was in dire straights, truly he was.  He flat lined the day of my last post, and everyone rushed to be at his side.  They had to paddle his heart EIGHT times to get it going again.  I didn’t even realize that they would do it that many times.  That they COULD do it that many times!  His wife gave the order that he is NOT to be paddled again if his heart stopped.  He made it through that night.  And then the next day my husband went to visit him, thinking that since he made it through the day as well, it might be his last chance to see him and tell him what needed to be said.  When he got there, Uncle was still on the respirator.  But HE. WAS. AWAKE.  And not only was he awake, he was aware, and responsive.  He could move his head ever so much to answer yes and no, and he was able to squeeze my husband’s hand as response to questions!  Uncle has been awake, and improving very slightly every day since.  Just the tiniest amounts.  Baby steps.  It just makes me laugh out loud, because my husband and I were convinced (and the only ones to even consider the idea) that he could recover from this.  We were shocked and angry when they said he wasn’t going to make it, and my husband took the time to tell him so.  We’re rooting for him, pulling for him, we’re convinced he’s going to recover and we insist that he fight this through.  So I guess… false alarm everybody, thanks for the prayers!

Now, separately, I can’t even believe that of all things I forgot to do my Flashback Friday post.  I’m completely disappointed in myself.  I considered making a Slacker Saturday post with the Friday Flashback photo in it just to save face.  Instead, I’ve made 8 mini loafs of buttermilk cornbread that will never see the outside of my home, even though they were intended to be a part of the gift baskets I’m putting together.  I gave my family the taste test veto power, and got a unanimous thumbs down.  I like buttermilk, so I thought they were good, but I understand that buttermilk is not for everyone.  It came through too much in the taste, so I get it.  I’m not sure I can eat eight of these all alone, though.  Hopefully they’ll freeze well.  I also made a batch of toffee which turned out good but took a dog’s age to finish, because I had the heat a little low (because I’m paranoid about scorching the sugar).  It was to the point where I pulled a chair up to the stove.  It was ridiculous.  I also finished six more batches of the glazed almonds which, as I mentioned, can be painful, but delicious!. Oh, and I made for the freezer three batches of chocolate chip cookie dough to make bar cookies later.  My house smells like cotton candy when you walk in, it’s wonderful.  Cotton candy and buttermilk.

Here’s what I haven’t done.  Wrapped one single stinking gift.  Not one!!!  Bought a birthday cake for the family party planned for TOMORROW for my son.  Prepared for the gift exchange at work, OR the pot luck.  Bought a Christmas gift for my husband.  Or my mother!  Worked on the work that I brought home on Friday.  I had also previously brought this work home on Wednesday…. and Thursday.  Dammit. Gotten together a box of food for the pantry to donate before Christmas.  Dye the horrible roots in my hair!!!

Yea, I gotta run.  Like, now.

  1. Girl, you are putting the rest of us (ok, well me specifically) to shame! You are super holiday woman. I am so impressed I am almost speechless. I made sugar cookies today, and that will be it!
Oh, and those almonds sound like a really really good blog post! (hint hint!).
Totally wonderful your Uncle is doing better. What put him in the hospital?
    xoxo
